Not long after VAQ-141 was established, Skipper “Arb” Rylant asked noted Naval Aviation illustrator Hank Caruso (and future “Honorary Naval Aviator”) to design a distinctive patch for the squadron. The result was a hawk in western attire with a loaded six-gun under the squadron’s original “Desperado” radio callsign.

The “Chicken with a Gun” patch, as it was also called, quickly became mandatory on squadron flight suits and was known to appear in shops and other squadron locations.  While the patch has seen periods of absence over the years, it remains one of the defining images of the squadron over the years.
